Latos Throws 1-Hit Shutout, Padres Sweep Giants

Mat Latos pitched an unbelievable game today, shutting out the Giants 1-0. Latos allowed one hit and no walks in the game, as Eli Whiteside (single) and Matt Downs (reached on error by Lance Zawadzki) were the only baserunners for San Francisco.

Latos needed to face only 28 batters and throw 106 pitches to finish off the Giants. He lowered his ERA to 3.32 and his WHIP to 0.97.

Jonathan Sanchez and Brian Wilson were nearly as good as Latos, combining to allow five hits, one run, and a walk while striking out six, but Sanchez took the hard-luck loss for San Francisco.

Lance Zawadzki’s double was the only extra-base hit of the day, and he scored the games only run on a Latos single. Latos is batting .308 on the year, certainly impressive for a pitcher.

Adrian Gonzalez, Chase Headley, and Tony Gwynn had the other three San Diego singles.

Kyle Blanks started against a lefty again, and predictably struggled, going 0-for-3 with a strikeout. Blanks’ average is down to .174.

The Padres are now 6-0 against the Giants this season, and have opened up a nice 3 1/2 game lead in the NL West.
