Padres Select HS OF Connor Hofmann With 16th Round Pick in 2010 MLB Draft

The Padres selected speedy California high school outfielder Connor Hofmann in the 16th round of this year’s draft.

Hofmann hit .438/.488/.759 as a senior in 2010.

A left-handed hitter with an upright stance that reminds me a bit of Travis Buck, Hofmann doesn’t have a textbook setup at the plate, but what he does is more “unorthodox” than “flawed.” He’s a speedster with good range and a decent arm in center field.

He is committed to Oregon.

Hofmann will need to work on his plate discipline if he signs: elite HS hitters are pitched around enough that they should have OBPs over 50 points higher than their AVG. That’ll get more essential for him in pro ball, where he certainly won’t be posting Isolated Power marks above .300 (much as we hope)…
