Padres Select Indiana University of Pennsylvania SS Paul Bingham With 20th Round Pick in 2010 MLB Draft

The Padres went back to the four-year college ranks in the 20th round after going juco in the previous two, selecting Indiana University of Pennsylvania infielder Paul Bingham.

Bingham, 22, is a tremendous runner who stole 45 bases (in 52 attempts) in just 55 games. He adds to an impressive crop of speedsters the Padres have picked in this year’s draft.

Bingham hit a whopping .463/.530/.705 as a senior. Don’t be fooled by the slugging percentage–he’s not a power hitter, as he only homered three times.

No, Bingham’s slugging is a product of a whopping 12 triples. He clearly fits the aggressive baserunning mold the Padres love (even if I don’t). If you’re going to emphasize speed, it makes sense to get guys that fit that philosophy, from the majors all the way down to Rookie ball.

It’s also worth noting that Bingham struck out a paltry 17 times, compared to 30 walks.

Bingham is something of an erratic fielder, although his speed given him solid range. I wouldn’t be surprised if he becomes a utility guy in the end.
