Padres Select Juco RHP Will Scott in 32nd Round of 2010 MLB Draft

The Padres began a long string of pitching picks in the 32nd round of the 2010 MLB Draft, and their first selection in that string was Will Scott from Walters State Community College.

Scott, 19, is a converted outfielder with an array of solid pitches.

He throws an average fastball in the 88-91 range, touching 92, and complements it with a changeup that rates as average-plus.

Both his curveball and slider are workable pitches as well.

Scott, a Kennesaw State commit, is probably one of the less likely to sign–it’s very possible that he’ll want to go to KSU (which has a recent history of high-picked pitchers) and hone his stuff, particularly his breaking pitches, since he’s new to pitching, and try to get drafted much higher later on.

Scott struck out 101 against 35 walks in 87 2/3 innings last season. He posted a solid 3.71 ERA.

I’d be a bit surprised if Scott winds up with the Padres this year, but he looks like a solid pick.
