Padres Select Northwestern State OF Oscar Garcia in 31st Round of 2010 MLB Draft

The Padres opened the final day of their 2010 draft by nabbing Northwestern State outfielder Oscar Garcia, a 21-year-old lefthanded hitter.

Garcia is a speedster with a good feel for hitting. He batted .375/.473/.526 this season for Northwestern State, also going a perfect 13-for-13 in steals.

The number that jumps out, though, is his walk-to-strikeout ratio.

41 to 12.

You just don’t see that often.

It looks like Garcia certainly will be able to make contact in pro ball. He managed six homers, so he isn’t completely without some punch at the plate.

Defensively, he’s fundamentally sound in the outfield, good enough to play center.

Gosh, I like this pick for the K/BB ratio alone. It’s tough to argue that Garcia is without skills.
