Padres Select Fairfield RHP Rob Gariano in 36th Round of 2010 MLB Draft

In Rounds 32-39, a period in which they selected eight straight hurlers, the Padres drafted several short pitchers.

Possibly the smallest of the bunch is 22-year-old Rob Gariano, a senior right-hander from Fairfield University.

Just 5’10” 180, Gariano is a command guy who throws a fastball in the low-90’s to go with a decent breaking ball and changeup. He can touch 93-94 when he rears back, which is surprising for a pitcher of his stature.

Gariano posted a 4.29 ERA as a senior, striking out 74 and walking 31 in 94 1/3 innings.

Given his small frame and possible velocity increase, Gariano is likely to move to relief in pro ball, where he can pitch at 93 more consistently and not have as many durability concerns.

Not the most exciting pick statistically or scouting-wise, but the impressive velocity, solid command, and potential for growth upon moving to relief make Gariano a solid pick this late.
