I don't think you can ever give up on Poreda, but his K/BB marks are disturbing to say the least, and they don't seem to be improving with time.

I love Russell, but for some reason, he's been hit around in AAA. It could just be a fluke (given the small sample size of relief seasons, that wouldn't be the first time), but he's an older guy who certainly can't afford many missteps at his age.

Yeah, I think the Padres won the deal, but I think both sides got less than what they expected.

Poreda is to young to give up on, and I really think he deserves some consideration for last year. He started in AA, packed his bags for AAA, packed his bags for the White Sox, packed his bags and went back to AAA, packed his bags and went to Portland, and packed his bags and came to San Diego.

That's five teams, in five leagues, at three levels, in two organizations, all in one year. That's a lot for a 22 year old to adjust to, don't you think? I'd be surprised if he wasn't a little disoriented after that. He's still a lefty with a plus fastball and at 23 there's still time for the Padres system to get him back on track.

Russell may have more promise than you suggest. He hasn't stuck with the Padres because he was a short term fill-in. Both Black and Balsley mentioned "he'll be back" the last time he was sent down, so I take it they see something in him. I'm not about to question their pitching judgement.

Add the promise of those two to Richard, and it looks like a great trade. The knock on Peavy was that he had such a violent delivery that he was an injury candidate, and that seems to have been borne out by the nature of his injury. Even if he comes back strong, considering his contract, it's still a great trade.
