Padres a Possibility for Troy Glaus or Jorge Cantu

Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman reported that the San Diego Padres may be interested in taking a look at either Troy Glaus or Jorge Cantu.

Troy Glaus played his high school baseball in Carlsbad. He would be a strong right handed bat that can play both 1B and 3B. He is a 13 year veteran and still showed some pop in his bat last season. He would be able to split time with Chase Headley and Brad Hawpe at first and third. Last season he played for the Atlanta Braves and hit .240, with 16 home runs and 71 RBI.

Jorge Cantu spent last season with both the Florida Marlins and the Texas Rangers. He can play defense all over the infield (1b, 3b, and 2B) and would add a nice right handed bat to the bench to give either Hawpe or Headley a break against lefty pitchers, just like Glaus would.

If the Padres are able to pick up either Glaus or Cantu, it would strengthen the Padres bench and would also strengthen the Padres lineup against left handed pitchers. Both players would also give the Padres an experienced first baseman, Brad Hawpe has only started 8 games at first in his major league career.
