Tim Stauffer named the opening day starter

Opening day against the St. Louis Cardinals is less than a week away and Tim Stauffer will take the mound against them. Stauffer has been the best starting pitcher this spring for the Padres with a 2-0 record and an ERA of 3.66. He was also the most consistent pitcher down the final stretch for the Padres last season. He just goes out on the mound and gets the job done.

The recent injury to Mat Latos, may have opened the door for Stauffer to take the opening day start. Hopefully Stauffer can go out there and shut down Albert Pujols and the rest of the Cardinals to get the first win of the season. He will be pitching against Chris Carpenter in that first start.

Stauffer has a career 14-19 record with a 4.06 ERA. Last season, he started out as the long man in the bullpen and then moved into the starting rotation in the middle of the year. He finished the year with a 6-5 record and an ERA of 1.85.
