A year ago at the All-Star break, the San Francisco Giants were fourth in the NL West and chasing the first-place San Diego Padres before rallying to win the World Series. The Giants might be in a better position at the same point this season but still have some offensive shortcomings to overcome.

SAN DIEGO — Earlier this month, after a pitcher making his Major League debut limited the Padres to one run over seven innings, manager Bud Black was left to respond to essentially the same questions that have become staples of his postgame gathering with reporters this season.

While the San Diego Padres’ first-round draft pick, Cory Spangenberg, debuted at second base to minimal effect, Rymer Liriano tripled and homered, Connor Powers homered and Mark Hardy (6-7) got the win with six innings of five-hit pitching as the TinCaps (8-11) edged Burlington 3-2 in Burlington, Iowa.

San Diego, CA (June 2011) – Guinness World Records® Officials will be at PETCO’s annual “Dog Days of Summer” event at PETCO Park in San Diego as PETCO attempts to set the world record for most dogs at a costume parade. Dogs and their human counterparts will participate in the annual infield parade prior to the start of the game. To be included in the record, pets must wear a minimum of two accessories such as a t-shirt or bandana. Attire demonstrating Padre spirit is strongly encouraged. The record setting attempt will take place during the pre-game pet parade on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 7:05 pm as the San Diego Padres take on the Arizona Diamondbacks.

“I’m not a huge fan, to be honest, of the home field being decided by the All-Star Game,” he said. “It’s weird that somebody who is on a last-place team right now could have an effect on that in this game.”

The dilemma was exemplified by San Diego Padres reliever Heath Bell, who made a running slide as he arrived at the mound in the eighth. “I told some guys I wanted to have fun this All-Star Game and needed some ideas, so guys back home kind of said slide on the mound,” he said, adding, “(NL manager Bruce Bochy) said before the game that this really counts, so I thought I was not going to do it. But then we were up by four runs.”
