It sounds like the Padres want to "ease" Cashner back from the injury. I think he projects as a starter in the long run and Boxberger could be your closer of the future.

@lynchmob I based that statement on his projections while with the Indians. He was a closer in their system and was successful at the minor league level. When the Padres did pick up Brad Boxberger, I wrote a piece discussing whether either of them would become the future closer and if so which one. Now with Cashner, I think both will have to take a back seat. I'd really love to see the Padres give Cashner a chance at starting. Unless there is more to his rotator cuff injury, that doesn't seem like the type of set back that derails a player's chance at starting.

Fantastic subject ... enough so to make me sign up so that I can comment ...

Cory Burns "project(s) to be (an) above-average Major League closer"? SInce I'd never heard of him, I found that hard to believe. OK ... I see he's who we got for Aaron Cunningham (December was a busy month for me :-)) ... which doesn't make it obvious to me that he's a top prospect ...

Corey Brock says this ...

"There's a little Hideo Nomo, Luis Tiant in there with the big turn," Padres general manager Josh Byrnes said of Burns' deceptive delivery. "He sits around 86-88 mph with a pretty good slider and what we think is an above-average changeup. It's deception and some weapons."

... which again wouldn't make me think he's a top prospect. I'm also suspect on Brad Brach. Projecting above-average Major League closers is tough to do ... but I'd start with above-average minor league starters rather than above-average minor league relievers.

I rooted for JJ Trujillo too :-)
