That's the question that always pops up when I think about these big name players the Padres can't afford. The alternative was two draft picks (which may not even be the case going forward with the new CBA). Nice writeup. Boston totally hosed us at this point. Kelly, Cashner, and Fuentes would all have to become anchors in the 2013 roster for this trade to be considered equal. Kelly may fulfill his destiny, Fuentes doesn't have enough bat for me, and Cashner, well, we'll see on his health. (BTW...Kelly was a converted shortstop, not catcher.)
