Padres vs Diamondbacks Game Recap: Chris Young’s Bomb Ends Game in 11

Trevor Cahill walked five Padres batter, but they scored no runs off those walks. That’s the summary of last night’s game. The offense was able to be patient at the plate and draw these walks but failed to capitalize with timely hitting. Edinson Volquez kept San Diego in the game, but they would eventually fall in extra innings 4-2 thanks to a Chris Young two-run homer.

Volquez pitched seven strong innings, giving up just two runs on five hits and three walks. He struck out eight and looked impressive. On the other hand, Trevor Cahill was wild. He walked six batter in six innings, but the Padres managed only two hits off him. Cahill struck out five and allowed just one run.

The Padres two runs came off a third inning double by Chase Headley in which he would eventually be brought around to score and a seventh inning triple by Orlando Hudson followed by an RBI single by Jason Bartlett. In the bottom of the ninth, San Diego got the lead-off man on board, but again, they could not come up with the big hit.

Jesus Guzman summed it up by saying, “We lost the game in the first three innings.”

Had the Padres been able to take advantage of the walks in the early innings, they would have won this game with Volquez’s strong outing. Instead, the team now sits at 1-4 with questions of their offense already creeping in less than a week into the season.

Game two of the series is today at 3:35 PT as Cory Luebke faces off against Joe Saunders. Luebke is looking to bounce back from his poor start against the Dodgers.
