Padres at Rockies Game Recap: Doubles Lead the Way to a Padres Win

The Padres pounded out seven doubles in the game with Chase Headley accounting for three of them.  Nick Hundley had three hits and three RBI.  And Cory Luebke was impressive.  Finally playing a team besides the Dodgers, the Padres were able to get back into the win column 7-1 over Colorado.

Luebke pitched seven strong innings.  He gave up just one run in the second inning, allowed six hits, and only walked one batter.  It was by far Luebke’s best outing so far this season.  Andrew Cashner and Micah Owings finished up the game to preserve the win for the Padres.

San Diego jumped on top early with two runs in the first inning and another in the third.  They didn’t let up there though.  They scored again in the fourth, seventh, and the ninth.  It was a completely different team than what we’ve seen for much of the first two weeks of the season.

San Diego collected 14 hits, a season high.  Every starter except Jeremy Hermida had a hit in the game, but even Hermida was hitting the ball hard in his outs.  The Padres not only got runners on base, but they came up with timely hits.  Hundley’s three RBI led the team, but Cameron Maybin had two of his own.

Jeremy Guthrie started for the Rockies and was hammered.  He managed to seven innings, but he gave up six runs, nine hits, and two walks.  He only struck out one batters, and Padres hitters only struck out three times for the game.

In the top of the first, the Padres hit three doubles (Will Venable, Chase Headley, Nick Hundley) to take the early 2-0 lead.  In the second, they used small-ball to manufacture another run.  On a hit and a walk, the Padres managed to score their third run of the game thanks to a Cameron Maybin sac-fly.  In the fourth innings, the doubles continued with a Jason Bartlett two-bagger.  The Padres finished up with doubles in the seventh and ninth as well.  The offense was a welcome sight for Cory Luebke.

"Our hitters took the pressure off all night.  We got the early lead and they didn’t stop. They kept the pressure on them. When you can go out and you know one swing’s not going to beat you, it lets you work in the zone a little more and try to get some quick outs."

The win moves San Diego to 3-8 on the season and snaps a four game slide.  The Padres continue their series with the Rockies today at 5:40 PT.  Anthony Bass will get his second start of the season, and the ageless wonder, Jamie Moyer, will take the hill for Colorado.
