Padres vs. Phillies Game Recap: Wieland Tosses Six Strong in Loss

Lost in what may have been the worst offensive game this season for the Padres was Joe Wieland‘s gem.  He struggled in his debut against the Dodgers, but shined last night.  In six innings, Wieland allowed just five hits, gave up one run, and struck out seven.  And he took the loss.

The Padres could not find home plate as Vance Worely struck out 11 Padres hitters, the team struck out 12 times as a whole, and  San Diego was shut out for the second time this season.  Worely held the Padres to just four hits.  San Diego wasted plenty of opportunities in the game.  They had a lead off triple in which they couldn’t push across  run.  They had runners on first and second with one out only to see the inning end on a strange strike ’em out and throw ’em out double play.

In what can only be described as embarrassing, the Padres have now struck out 109 times.  Tops in the MLB by nine.

San Diego has now fallen to 3-11.  While there is plenty of baseball to be played, trends are forming, and holes are being dug.  San Diego needs to find a way to run off a few wins in a row.  The Padres send Edinson Volquez to the mound against Cole Hamels in tomorrow night’s game.  The Padres take on the Phillies from Petco at 7:05 PT.
