Padres vs. Marlins Game Recap: Despite Offensive Explosion, San Diego Loses in 12

Anthony Bass was not quite sharp.  He allowed five runs in the first inning, one run in the third inning, and finished the game charged with six earned.  However, Bass was given the opportunity to redeem himself and he did just that.  It was an opportunity only afforded to National League players, but Bass capitalized on it and helped himself at the plate.

In his first at-bat, Bass cleared the bases with a  two-out triple that looked to have been mis-played by Gioncarlo Stanton in right field.  Stanton took an odd route to the ball that was clearly going to fall in for at least a single, and the ball skipped past his outstretched glove allowing Bass to reach third.  Bass would also single in the fifth and come around to score on a Mark Kotsay double.

The run scored by Bass put San Diego ahead 7-6, but the Marlins came back and scored two in the seventh.  The scored would remain 8-7 in favor of the Marlins until the bottom of the ninth.  Cameron Maybin doubled home Jesus Guzman in the bottom of the ninth.  In extras though, San Diego failed to score, and Miami finally broke through with a run in the 12th.

Former-Padre Heath Bell blew his fourth save of the season when he allowed Guzman to score in the ninth.  He has struggled all season and there has been talk about removing him from the closer role in Miami.  In fact, Edward Mujica got the save opportunity in Thursday’s game for the Marlins.

In the top of the 12th, a walk to Hanley Ramirez came back to bite the Padres.  After allowing the walk, Josh Spence struck out Greg Dobbs.  He then gave up an RBI double to Omar Infante before getting the final two outs of the inning.

It was an offensive night unlike any seen in Petco Park recently.  While entertaining, the Padres could not score in the bottom of the 12th and came away with their 18th loss of the season.
