Padres vs Marlins Game Recap: Mark Buehrle Dominates

After the offensive explosion of Friday night’s game, yesterday’s game was more of the prototypical Padres game played at Petco Park.  The Marlins scored first and carried a 1-0 lead into the sixth when the Padres finally tied the game.  But the Padres would quickly give up two in the eighth and one in the ninth and lose 4-1.

Mark Buehrle of the Marlins was dominant.  He pitched a complete game five-hitter.  He struck out three and walked two while allowing just the one run.  Clayton Richard was not quite dominant, but he was solid.  He pitched seven innings, gave up nine hits and one walk, but allowed three runs.  He did manage to strike out seven in the game.

The two-run eighth for the Marlins started with a walk to Jose Reyes.  Reyes would later come around to score the go-ahead run on a Greg Dobbs single.  Richard actually pitched into the eighth inning, allowing just the one run to the Marlins through seven.  But he couldn’t get an out in the eighth.  He allowed the walk, a bunt single, and a single to Greg Dobbs.

Despite the low offensive output, the Padres defensive kept them in the game for a change.  The team didn’t commit and error in the game, and they had two outfield assists – one from Jesus Guzman and one from Chris Denorfia.

The complete game was Buehrle’s first since 2010, and it only took slightly over 2 hours to finish the game.  San Diego finishes up the home stand today in game four of the series at 1:05 PT.  Joe Wieland will take on Ricky Nolasco.  Wieland is still looking for his first Major League win.
