It was a tad ludicrous, but I was kind of hoping they would tank (they were in the middle of awful seasons in '08 and '09) to get Strasburg or Harper in one or both of those years. But hey, the Padres were too afraid to deal with Scott Boras once ('04), that it likely would not have done them any good as both of those players (and many top choices) are represented by him. San Diego will have to mine for diamonds in the rough for cheap as usual if they wish to compete down the road.
