Its just organizational depth, man. The Padres have had to dip into the FA pool to sign guys to fill out a roster. Casey Kelly is out with elbow issues, and is about 3-4 weeks away from getting back. Suppan was never supposed to pitch here, but injuries necessitated it. The Edmonds deal hurt, but at the time, the Padres also had Headley above him on the organizational depth chart. Marquis could get a chance, and eat some innings, while the young guys get more seasoning. Nothing wrong with the move in my opinion. Thanks for reading!

Typical Padres move--signing a player when his career is over. Just like trading David Freese for Jim Edmonds when Edmonds could no longer play the outfield. Or signing Suppan when he can longer pitch well.. Meanwhile pitchers like Casey Kelley don't get a chance. The Padres started the season with an infield combination (Bartlett and Hudson) that can no longer play well. Then they traded their best reliever (Frieri) for a second baseman that can't hit. Meanwhile Weems is doing well in the minors. The Pads start every season with over the hill players and don't start young players until they give up on the season. And why Marquis now? They should have signed him 10 years ago, not now. Will they try signing Jim Palmer or Moyer next?
