Padres Ride Bullpen to Victory Against Brewers

The Padres started the process of transitioning Andrew Cashner into the rotation, although it was the Padres latest acquisition that came up big on the mound.

After Cashner gave the Padres 2.1 innings, and 47 pitches, Ross Ohlendorf stepped in, and got the win for San Diego. Ohlendorf, in his second appearance as a Padre, pitched 4.1 innings, giving up just one run on five hits, striking out 4. Ohlendorf was pitching for AAA Pawtuckett, in the Red Sox organization, before signing with San Diego last week.

showed some major potential in just his second major league start, as he struck out 5, and threw 31 of his 47 pitches for strikes. He also chipped in with 5 strikeouts. Cashner will be optioned to AA San Antonio, to build up stamina in his arm. His only blemish on the afternoon was an RBI double to Rickie Weeks in the first.

The score was tied at 2 in the sixth, when the Padres went ahead for good. John Baker lined a two-run single back up the middle, scoring two runs off of Brewers starter Michael Fiers. Yonder Alonso lined a single up the middle in the 7th, to give the Padres a 5-2 lead they would not relinquish. Alonso busted out of an 0-21 slump with two hits.

Huston Street pitched a spotless ninth for his fifth save. He shares the team lead with Dale Thayer. Overall, it was a good day for the Padres pen – 6.2 innings, giving up just one run and and six strikeouts. The Padres can take the series from Milwaukee tomorrow, and they will send Anthony Bass to the bump.
