It only took 64 games, but the Padres reached a few 2012 milestones. With a 6-2 win over the Mariners. the Padres got their first sweep of the year, and they also have their lonhest winning streak of the year — at 3 games. The Padres rode the arm of Edinson Volquez, and took advantage of a Mariners error for the easy win.
The Padres got on the board with 3 runs in the 5th. Will Venable got the scoring started with an RBI single. The Padres got two more runs, when Everth Cabrera grounded into a fielders choice. Venable was out at second, but was able to force a bad throw from Dustin Ackley. The throw scored two more runs, and the Padres never looked back.
Volquez turned in one of his finest starts as a Padre, pitching into the seventh inning. Volquez gave up only 4 hits, but he did allow 4 walks, striking out 6. He picked up the win, improving his record to 3-6.
The Padres added three more runs in the sixth, on an RBI double by Chris Denorfia, and RBI singles by Jesus Guzman and John Baker. Baker and Guzman each had 2 hits, and the Padres had 11 for the game.
The Padres record improved to 23-41, and they will start a 3-game series with Oakland Friday.
