Marquis rebounded, and was brilliant. He pitched 7 innings, and struck out 10 batters. It was the first double-digit strikeout performance by a Padres all season. Marquis also had his 1,000 strikeout of his career, when he fanned Ian Kinsler in the second.
The Padres scored their only run in the 1st, when Chase Headley smacked a double to center, scoring Chris Denorfia. The Padres could not push across the tying run, as Everth Cabrera grounded out to end the inning.
San Diego had the bases loaded in the sixth, but missed an opportunity to tie the game, as pinch-hitter Yonder Alonso grounded out to end the inning.
