Injury Hooks Bass, Padres Swept By Texas

Anthony Bass had one of his best starts of the year, but shoulder inflammation ended his day prematurely. Bass rolled through 5 innings, throwing just 60 pitches(43 pitches). Bass also had the Padres only RBI’s of the game, and the Padres lost 4-2.

Bass has struggled mightily recently, allowing 26 ER’s in his last 26.1 innings going into Wednesday’s game. However, Bass was solid against the mighty Rangers lineup, and delivered with a two-run single, to give the Padres a 2-0 lead after 2.

The Padres had a 2-1 lead in the 6th, when Dale Thayer came on to pitch for San Diego. Thayer allowed a single to Michael Young and a double to Josh Hamilton. After an intentional walk to Adrian BeltreNelson Cruz tied the game on a fielder’s choice. The Rangers took the lead for good, when Brad Boxberger walked in a run.

The Padres had no answer for Yu Darvish. Darvish went 8 innings, allowing 5 hits and 3 walks, striking out 8. He tight-roped out of trouble in the early innings, and seemed to get more dominant as the game went along. The Padres again struggled to hit in the clutch, going just 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

San Diego brought the tying run to the plate in the 9th inning, after a two-out hit by Everth Cabrera. John Baker struck out, and the Padres threat was dispatched as quickly as it came.

Bass is expected to have his shoulder looked at tomorrow, and the Padres can ill afford to lose another starter to the DL. The Padres are off tomorrow, before opening their final Interleague series of the year against the Seattle Mariners Friday night.
