The Padres fell behind early to Seattle, and it looked as if the Padres were doomed for a fourth straight loss. However, the bats woke up, and Clayton Richard settled down, to give the Padres a 9-5 win over the Mariners.

The Mariners jumped out of the gate quickly, and led 4-0 after 3 innings. The Mariners got a two-run homer by Franklin Gutierrez in the 1st, and a solo shot by Miguel Olivo in the second.

The Padres scored two in the third, but broke the game wide open in the 4th inning, scoring 5 runs. Everth Cabrera started the scoring with an opposite field double. Clayton Richard then came up with a two-run double of his own, scoring Cabrera and Logan Forsythe. The Padres scored two more in the inning, on a RBI single by Will Venable, and a sacrifice fly by Chase Headley.

Richard rebounded from his early struggles, and pitched a solid game. He went 6.2 innings, and allowed 5 runs(3 earned) and struck out 6, to improve his record to 5-7.

Will Venable had 3 hits out of the leadoff spot, and Chase Headley went 1-3, with 3 RBI’s. Richard also drove in 3 runs for the Padres, who are a perfect 4-0 against the Seattle Mariners this year. The Padres will send Jason Marquis to the mound tomorrow night, to do battle with Felix Hernandez.
