The Padres are playing their best ball of the season. The Padres used three homers, and a tremendous pitching performance by Clayton Richard to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-2. The Padres have won six of their last nine.

The Padres got on the board early, when that diminutive power-hitter named Alexi Amarista slugged his fourth homer of the year — all four coming in the last five games. With a 3-5 performance, Amarista raised his average to .284. He was a triple short of the cycle.

The score remaining 1-0 in the 6th, when Cameron Maybin slammed an epic shot into the left-field picnic area at Chase Field. The bomb traveled an estimated 485 feet — the longest homer in the majors this year.  Alexi Amarista padded the lead for the Padres, stroking a two-run double, to put the Padres ahead 4-0.

Clayton Richard was brilliant again, getting within one out of a complete game. However he was lifted with in the ninth, after allowing back-to-back singles. Joe Thatcher cleaned up the mess for his 1st save of the season, and the 1st of his career.

Yasmani Grandal continues to impress, as he hit his 3rd homer of his brief career. He also singled, to go 2-5. The single was the first hit of his career that was not a homer.
