Padres Offense Comes Through In Win Over Houston

Baseball is such a strange game. The Padres could not get anything going offensively in a 2-0 loss last night to Houston. Tonight, the Padres pounded out 13 hits, in an 8-2 win over the Houston Astros.

The Padres were trailing 1-0, when Yonder Alonso took Astros starter Jordan Lyles deep, for a two-run homer. The bomb was Alonso’s fourth of the year, and his first at Petco National Park.

The Padres took the lead for good in the fifth inning, when Chase Headley stroked a double to left field, that scored Logan Forsythe. Yasmani Grandal drove in Headley with an RBI single that gave the Padres a 4-2 lead.

There was a little controversy in the 7th, when Cameron Maybin lined a shot to left. The ball was ruled a ground-rule double, after a fan reached into the field of play to snag the ball. From replays, it did not look as if the ball would clear the wall, but it did drive in two runs to put the Padres up 8-2.

San Diego got a nice outing from Ross Ohlendorf, who gave up just one earned run in six innings. Ohlendorf walked only one batter, and struck out six. He improved to 3-0 on the year.

After Ohlendorf left, the Padres bullpen pitched three perfect innings.
