Volquez Throws A One-Hitter To Give Padres A Series Win

The Padres took the final game of the four game series, 1-0, behind the arm of Edinson Volquez. Volquez threw a one-hitter, a flash of brillance that brought back memories of his 2008 campaign with the Cincinnati Reds. Volquez only walked three batters, and threw a 117 pitches in his masterpiece.

The Padres scored their only run of the game in the first, when Alexi Amarista led off the game with a double. The next batter, Logan Forsythe singled to right to give the Padres the only run of the game.

On most nights, this would be an example of how boring games at Petco Park can be, but Volquez’s gem outweighs any offensive deficiencies. The Astros only hit came in the second inning, off of the bat of Matt Downs. The ball was a little dribbler back to the mound, and if Volquez had let the ball go, Chase Headley might have been able to make the play.

The game was also the last time that the Padres and Astros that will play each other, at least as members of the National League. The Astros will start play in the American League West next season.
