Padres Feel Right At Home In Win Over Miami

Much has  been made lately of the Padres and their Miami roots. Cameron Maybin played parts of three seasons with the Marlins, and both Yonder Alonso and Yasmani Grandal grew up in the area, and both attended the University of Miami. The Padres hometown connect sure came up large on Friday night.

Grandal and Alonso combined to drive in five runs, and the Padres cruised to a 7-2 win in their first ever game in the new Marlins Park.

The Marlins jumped ahead of the Padres in the 4th inning, scoring two runs off of Padres starter Kip Wells. Jose Reyes had an RBI triple. Wells turned in a solid outing for the Padres, giving up just a pair of runs in his six innings of work. He improved his record to 2-3.

The score remained 2-0 until the sixth, when the Padres scored five runs off of Marlins starter Carlos Zambrano. Carlos Quentin drew a bases-loaded walk. Grandal then cleared the bases with a triple, to put the Padres ahead 4-2. Alonso then delivered an RBI single.

Cameron Maybin returned to the lineup for the Padres, and went 1-4, with an RBI double. He also made a sparkling grab in center. It was Maybin’s first start since July 17th.

The Miami boys — Grandal and Alonso combined to go 4-9 with 5 RBI’s. Grandal is hitting .307 on the year.

Brad Brach pitched a scoreless inning in relief. He has given up just 2 runs in his last 11.2 innings, striking out 13 in that span.
