Padres Offensive Attack Leads To A Series Win

The Padres were held in check for most of Saturday’s loss to the Mets, but their offensive was in top-form Sunday afternoon, clubbing three home runs, in a 7-3 win over the Mets.

The Padres got off to a quick start against Mets phenom pitcher Matt Harvey, scoring two runs in the first inning. The runs came courtesy of a two-run shot by Chase Headley, his 15th of the year, and the Padres never looked back. Harvey came into the game with a 1.59 ERA in his first two Major League starts, but he was no match for the mighty Padres.

San Diego added three more runs in the third inning on an RBI double by Carlos Quentin and a two-run blast by Yonder Alonso, his sixth of the year.

The Padres got a much-needed solid effort from starter Jason Marquis, who gave up three runs in his 6.1 innings of work. The outing allowed the Padres to give their overworked bullpen some rest.

The Mets cut the lead to 5-3 in the seventh, but the Padres put the game away with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Carlos Quentin hit a solo shot in the eighth, his 11th of the year. Mark Kotsay added an RBI in the eighth on a pinch-hit double to put the game out of the reach.

Huston Street pitched a scoreless ninth in a non-save situation. Street has not allowed a run in his last 18 1/3 innings.
