Aside from sending Jason Marquis to the disabled list, the Padres claimed RHP Thad Weber on waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

Weber, who is 27, was the Tigers 18th round pick in 2008. He made his ML debut this year for Detroit, posting a 0-1 record, with a 9.00 ERA in two games for Detroit. He pitched out of the bullpen for the Tigers, but has been a starter for the majority of his professional career.

Weber was never considered a big-time prospect, but he did throw a no-hitter in 2009, while pitched for AA Erie. Weber has started 21 games for AAA Toledo, and has a 7-11 record, with a 4.20 ERA. For his career in the minors, Weber has a 35-46 record with 4.03 ERA in 115 career games(113 starts)/

Weber features a fastball, a cutter, and a changeup. According to Fangraphs, Weber averages 89.4 on his fastball, with a top-speed of close to 92. He should be a candidate to take Jason Marquis’ spot in the rotation.

To make room for Weber on the 40-man roster, the Padres designated RHP Neil Wagner for assignment. The Padres claimed Wagner off of waivers earlier in the year from Oakland. Wagner was pitching at AAA Tucson, and posted a 3-o record, with a 5.17 ERA in 30 games.
