The Padres started to whittle away at their bloated 40-man roster. Today the Padres outrighted pitcher Thad Weber and catcher Ali Solis off of the 40-man roster. The roster moves were first reported by Padres beat writer Corey Brock.
Weber, 28, was claimed off of waivers by the Padres on August 23, from Detroit. Weber never pitched for the Padres, but did post a 1-0 record with a 4.42 in 3 starts with Tucson. Weber will remain property of the Padres.
Solis, 25, was later claimed on waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Solis got into five games for the Padres this year, going 0-4, with two strikeouts. He spent the majority of the year playing for AA San Antonio, where he was a Texas-League All-Star.
The Solis moves comes a surprise, as it would seem that John Baker would be a non-tender candidate. Solis seemed to be slated for AAA Tucson, where he would be the 3rd catcher on the 40-man roster. The Padres should several moves coming with their 40-man roster in the coming weeks.
