Recap of Padres Chat With Bill Center

My partner-in-crime Robert Moreno posted some notes from Bill Center’s weekly chat with U-T readers. Center had some interesting answers to questions from readers. Here are some of the more intriguing notes:

Many of the questions involved the Padres potentially pursuing young slugger Giancarlo Stanton. As much as that would excite the Padres’ fan base, it is completely unrealistic. He would cost far too much at this point. Fun to think about, though.

Center mentioned that the Padres could buy-low on current Indians starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez. Jimenez was pretty awful in 2012, but at this point, he might not cost more than a mid-level prospect. Personally, Jimenez is intriguing, but he is far too similar to Edinson Volquez in my opinion. The Padres need a veteran who can throw strikes. Jimenez averaged nearly five walks per nine innings pitched last year. No thanks.

Center also thinks the Padres are much more likely to trade for pitching, as opposed to dipping into the free agent pool. Personally, Dan Haren would be at the top of the list, but his price tag has likely increased, given the ridiculous contract that Kansas City gave to Jermey Guthrie. Haren would be a perfect fit in San Diego.

Center also states that Padres prospect Robbie Erlin has really helped his stock with a tremendous campaign in the Arizona Fall League. Erlin could be in the mix for a rotation spot, but figures to open the season in AAA.
