Padres Should Inquire About Chone Figgins

Chase Headley is out for about a month with a broken thumb. And now the Padres are scrambling to find a serviceable third baseman who could hold his ground until Headley gets back.

The logical choice is moving Jedd Gyorko to third, or giving Forsythe a shot at his natural position. James Darnell is waiting in the wings.

However, I suggest the Padres to look elsewhere.

According to CBSSports.com, the Miami Marlins released veteran third baseman Chone Figgins. If I were the Padres, I’d inquire about him.

We all know Figgins has been a big disappointment ever since he left the Angels back in 2009.

But I still suggest that the Padres make a phone call to Figgins’ agent.  This isn’t going to be the popular choice in Padres land  but it’s a choice I feel could work.

Figgins is not the ball player Headley is. Figgins lacks power, is not a guy who works the count, and is not a gold glove caliber defender.

What Figgins does have is speed. Sure the 35-year-old doesn’t have the same speed he had when he was 27, but he’s faster than most 35-year-olds.

Figgins is on his last legs trying to latch on to a MLB team. When  a guy is fighting for his career it’s pretty scary to see what they can do.

Now let me make this clear, I am not saying Figgins should be the starting third baseman. No, no. The Padres have better options, but I would like to see Figgins make the team as a reserve third baseman.

So what do you think Padres fans, should the Padres check-in on Figgins? Let us know in the comment box below.
