Here is the “Daily Roundup,” Friars fans:

  • Jamal Collier of MLB.com wrote a terrific piece on Kyle Blanks.  Collier discussed how San Diego’s outfielder/first baseman has taken advantage of his opportunity to play every-day after three extremely arduous seasons filled with various injuries and setbacks.
  • Former Padre infielder and third base coach, Tim Flannery, had some less than flattering things to say about the Dodgers organization according to Dayn Perry of CBS Sports.com.  Flannery, who is currently the Giants’ third base coach, is apparently mad that those in Los Angeles have essentially tried to downplay and dismiss “Bryan Stow situation.”  Flannery mentioned how the Dodgers honored a child who donated $200 to Stow during a recent game, but there was no mention why the kid was donating money. Stow is of course the Giants fan who was savagely beaten in the parking lot at Dodger Stadium back in 2011.
  • Members of San Diego’s brass were in attendance for a workout in Fort Lauderdale, FL yesterday for prospect Dariel Alvarez.  The 24 year-old outfielder is a Cuban-defector who has just been cleared by the Commissioner’s Office to sign with a big league team, according to Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors (via MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez).  Unfortunately for the frugal Friars, a bidding war could ensue due to the fact that Alvarez is overthe age limit for International signing limitations (23 years old) according to Adams.  The Dodgers, Rangers, Red Sox, Royals, Mariners, Diamondbacks and Yankees were also there for the workout as well.
