Here is the “Daily Roundup,” Friars fans:
- The Padres inked Ruddy Girón of the Dominican Republic to a contract on Tuesday according to Tim Dierks of MLB Trade Rumors (via Dionisio Soldevila of ESPN Deportes). The Dominican shortstop is 5’11” 175 lbs. according to Minor League Ball (SB Nation) and was signed for $600,000.
- Padres.com beat writer Corey Brock also reported that the Friars signed another 16 year-old from the Dominican Republic, pitcher Jaimito Lebron. The pitcher signed for $410,000 and is 6’2″ 170 lbs. according to the Padres’ website.
- Bill Center of the San Diego Union-Tribune posted his “Padres Mailbag” yesterday. Probably the most interesting pieces of news in Center’s article surrounded pitchers Corey Luebke and Joe Wieland. Both starters saw their 2013 seasons cut short due to elbow injuries, and both are trying to return this year. Luebke has had two bouts of “elbow discomfort” and will unfortunately stay shelved until September unless his recovery improves. Wieland on the other hand could potentially come back by mid-August.
- San Diego missed out on acquiring Jake Arrieta as the Cubs made a trade for the right-handed pitcher yesterday according to ESPN Chicago (via Keith Law).
