Padres Rocked in Colorado

The San Diego Padres get shellacked in Colorado Monday night by a final score of 14 – 2.  This game definitely ranks up there with one of worst games of the year all around played by the Padres and I hope they get it out of their system.  The Padres hitters managed a paltry 2 runs off 6 hits and 2 walks.  The other side of line score shows the Padres defense giving up 4 errors to the tune of 14 runs off 17 hits and 4 walks.  This was a pad and feasts your stats day for the Rockies hitters.  Horrible.  Who gives up 4 errors?  The Padres were playing in the rain, but the Rockies managed to get away with a clean sheet.  The cool thing about baseball to me, is that no matter where you are, the other team has to perform under the same conditions, so it’s even.

Padres starter Edinson Volquez lasted only 4 1/3 innings, earning the loss after giving up a whopping 8 earned runs off 9 hits and 3 walks.  It was basically a merciless slaughtering.  Volquez’s future with the Padres is looking more and more certain – non-existent.  What remains to be seen and which is yet still very uncertain, is how much longer will Buddy Black‘s leash be on Volquez.  Do the Padres give the starts to a younger pitcher and let him learn?  Ian Kennedy looks good, and more over, focused.  Its time to get the pitchers used the starters of the future.

For the Padres hitters, Jedd Gyorko and Jaff Decker had a few of the sparse highlights for the Padres’ team including pairs of home runs.  Decker’s home run was extra special as it turns out it was his very first major league hit.  The Padres hitters also ended the night going 0-5 with runners in scoring position.  Tough loss.  Hope we do better next time.
