Let me say that again.

The Padres starting lineup is scary.

If I were a manager I wouldn’t want my starting pitchers to face the Padres lineup.

I never thought I’d ever get to say that.

The starting lineup infused with a healthy Chase Headley, Carlos Quentin and a developing Yonder Alonso can be Major League Baseball’s best hearts of the order.

Sorry Dodgers.

Add Kyle Blanks into the equation and the starting lineup is deadly.

Mar 9, 2013; Peoria, AZ, USA; San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley (7) at bat during the first inning against the Texas Rangers at Peoria Sports Complex.
I don’t care what the skeptics say, Chase Headley did not have a fluke year in 2012. I fully expect him to be the hitter he was last year. If this is the case, Headley can give the Padres about a .290 batting average with 30-plus home runs and over 100 RBIs. No to mention his uncanny ability to get on base via the walk.

Carlos Quentin is a fearless hitter. While he will give the Padres a batting average hovering around .250, he will easily give the club 20 or so bombs.

Yonder Alonso is a doubles machine. The more this guy gets seasoned, the more his power develops. I’d say Alonso is good for about a .300 average and 10 bombs.

Where do I start with Kyle Blanks? This guy is a beast. His problem is staying healthy, if he can do that he can club over 30 home runs and drive in 100 RBIs. No Joke.

Don’t these guys sound intimidating? I sure as hell would want to face the Padres with all these guys in the lineup.

Chicken Friars staff writer Richie Smith suggested in one of his recent posts, that the time is now for Padres manager Bud Black to bench his most talented offensive player in Cameron Maybin. Smith’s argument is pretty compelling. He sites Maybin’s low batting average and woeful on-base percentage as his reason to why Buddy Black should bench Maybin.

Mandatory Credit: Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

Up until today, Maybin has posted a .067 batting average with zero home runs, one RBI and a .125 on base percentage.

In three years with the Padres, Maybin hasn’t done any better by putting together a slash line of .249/.310/.365.

Now, I am not saying I completely agree with Smith. I like Maybin, always have. He seems like a nice guy, and whenever he decides to hit can be one of the most exciting players in the league. There is no question about Maybin’s defense. An argument can be made for him being the best center fielder in the Majors. However, Smith does have a valid point. If you can’t produce you should ride the bench, no matter who you are.

It’s just so hard to bench a guy with as much potential as Maybin has. The former first round draft pick has the make up to be a five-tool player, instead we’ve only seen two tools: fielding and baserunning.

Maybin signed a five-year extension at the beginning of last season, so the Padres have to decide sooner rather than later what to do with their underperforming center fielder. Now, I ask you Padres fans, what should the Padres do with Maybin. Let us know in the comment box, your reasoning behind your vote.

Although the Padres didn’t make a significant move last off-season they were linked to several players. So far most of the players have not found success. However, there is one player who is having a monster season. Here I analyze how the players the Padres could have acquired to how they match up so far this season.

Mandatory Credit: Dennis Wierzbicki-USA TODAY Sports

Edwin Jackson – The Chicago Cubs signed Jackson to a four- year $36 million contract during the off-season. And so far the Cubs haven’t been getting their moneys worth. In two starts Jackson is 0-2 with a 5.73 earned run average. The Cubs’ No. 2 starter got hammered in his last start giving up five earned runs with five walks and six strikeouts. Jackson

Dan Haren – Haren has been inconsistent in two starts for the Washington Nationals. In his first outing against the Cincinnati Reds the right-hander lasted only four innings, giving up five runs, which four came off of home runs. Haren’s start was a little bit better, but he still manage to struggle. Haren got his first win of the season against the Chicago White Sox tossing over five innings with no strike outs and one walk. He did manage to give up 10 hits though. So far Haren and his one-year $13 million contract has produced a 1-1 record with a 9.00 ERA while giving up 19 hits in two starts.

Joe Saunders – Saunders is fitting in quite nicely with the Seattle Mariners. While his numbers aren’t astonishing he is the best pitcher so far that had been linked to the Padres this off-season. Saunders has a 1-1 record with a 3.48 ERA in two starts for the M’s. Saunders signed a one-year deal this off-season.

Shaun Marcum – Marcum hasn’t pitched a game yet in 2013 for the New York Mets. Marcum is suffering from nerve inflammation in his neck. So far Marcum has been a waste for the Mets at one-year $4million.

Justin Upton – I have every reason to believe that Upton would have been the trade that would have knocked Padres fans’ socks off. Unfortunately, Josh Byrnes was to scared to pull the trigger. That’s just to bad because Upton is having an MVP type season so far. Upton has a .385 batting average with six home runs and 10 RBI.

Let us know in the comment box what you think about these players.
