The Padres talked about the difficult decisions that they needed to make on all the minor league talent they have, coming to the conclusion that they would lose a player or two. The organization’s dilemma came to fruition, when the Astros selected Nathan Freiman in the 2nd round of the Major League portion of the Rule 5 Draft.

Freiman had a huge year in AA San Antonio, posting a triple-slash line of .298/.370/.502, with 24 homers and 105 RBI’s. Freiman was not considered a “top prospect,” but the year he had did open eyes in the organization. He played for Team Isreal in the World Baseball Classic qualifying rounds and represented the Padres in the Arizona Fall League.

Freiman will have a huge opportunity in Houston, as the Astros do not have a long-term solution at first base or designated hitter. Houston must keep him on the 25-man roster all season, or offer him back to San Diego for $25,000.

In the Triple-A phase of the draft, the Padres lost OF Sawyer Carroll, who was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays. Carroll was the Padres 3rd round pick in 2008. He spent 2012 playing for AAA Tucson, hitting .263 in 112 games.

The Padres opted not to select a player in the Major League phase of the draft.

The offseason is here, and it is time for the Padres to shape their roster for 2013. Everything I have read predicts that the Padres will pursue starting pitching. We have focused on pitching here, and Scott Baker would be an interesting candidate for the Padres rotation in 2013.

Baker, 31, has spent his entire career with the Twins. He missed virtually all of 2012, recovering from Tommy John surgery, but should be ready to go to start next season. The Twins declined Baker’s $9.25 million option for next year, but they do hope to resign him. If the deal falls through, Baker could be a fit in San Diego.

Aug 8, 2011; Minneapolis, MN, USA: Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Scott Baker (30) delivers a pitch in the first inning against the Boston Red Sox at Target Field. Mandatory Credit: Jesse Johnson-US PRESSWIRE

Baker turned in a magnificent 2011 for the Twinkies, when he 8-6, with a 3.14 ERA in 21 starts. Between 2007 and 2011, Baker made at least 21 starts, and he threw a career-high 200 innings in 2009.

Before the injury, Baker featured a fastball in the low-90′s, a curve and a changeup. Baker also possesses the ability to throw his offspeed pitches for strikes. In 2011, Baker also averaged 8.2 strikeouts per nine innings, showing that the right-hander has the ability to be dominant.

Baker will make far less than his option that was declined. It will intriguing to see if the new ownership will negotiate incentive-laden contracts, something that Jeff Moorad opposed. Baker might be worth a base salary of $2-4 million. I would be skeptical of committing more than that to a pitcher coming off of a serious injury.

The Padres started to whittle away at their bloated 40-man roster. Today the Padres outrighted pitcher Thad Weber and catcher Ali Solis off of the 40-man roster. The roster moves were first reported by Padres beat writer Corey Brock.

Weber, 28, was claimed off of waivers by the Padres on August 23, from Detroit. Weber never pitched for the Padres, but did post a 1-0 record with a 4.42 in 3 starts with Tucson. Weber will remain property of the Padres.

April 25, 2012; Detroit, MI, USA; Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Thad Weber (54) pitches in the fifth inning against the Seattle Mariners at Comerica Park.
Solis, 25, was later claimed on waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Solis got into five games for the Padres this year, going 0-4, with two strikeouts. He spent the majority of the year playing for AA San Antonio, where he was a Texas-League All-Star.

The Solis moves comes a surprise, as it would seem that John Baker would be a non-tender candidate. Solis seemed to be slated for AAA Tucson, where he would be the 3rd catcher on the 40-man roster. The Padres should several moves coming with their 40-man roster in the coming weeks.
