Bill Center, the Padres beat writer for the U-T San Diego, reported Saturday that Byrnes has offered the bullpen coaching position to Bob McClure.

McClure was Bobby Valentine’s pitching coach last season with the Boston Red Sox. Prior to that, he served as the pitching coach of the Kansas City Royals from 2006-2011. He also was a pitching coach in the Colorado Rockies system from 1999-2005.

The 60-year-old McClure pitched 19 seasons in the Major Leagues before finally hanging it up in 1993.

The bullpen coach position became available after Byrnes decided to return interim bullpen coach Jimmy Jones to his regular role of pitching coach to the Padres’ Double-A affiliate.

Center reports that McClure will make a decision sometime next week on whether or not he will accept the job.

McClure could be a huge get for the Padres. He has years of coaching experience and could serve as an additional pitching coach behind Darren Balsley.
