In an effort to make the opening day roster, Everth Cabrera is trying to prove to the Padres brass that he is willing to do anything and everything- even if that means playing in center field.

Now, Friar Fanatics don’t start hitting the panic button, this in no way means that Cameron Maybin’s job of patrolling that large runway in center field at Petco Park is in jeopardy. Maybin is fresh off of signing a five-year contract extension, so it is his job for today and for many years to come.

Corey Brock of Padres.com reports that this is only an effort to add versatility for the once-promising infielder.

Cabrera made his center field spring debut in the Padres 13-7 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Monday. He logged four innings and impressed Padres manager Bud Black with his play.

“He has the ability to go out there. He looked comfortable. His jumps and breaks looked good. He’s been taking balls in the outfield in practice and batting practice,” Padres manager Bud Black said. “He’s very comfortable out there.”

I am not sure what to make of all this. It is nice to know that Cabrera could play center field in a pinch, but he will be added to a long list of back-up center fielders that makes me question if he will ever play the position.

I don’t ever see Maybin taking a break from center field unless he gets the occasional of day or is  hit with the injury bug. However, if Maybin were to miss some time, Will Venable, Chris Denorfia, Mark Kotsay and even Blake Tekotte will be ahead of Cabrera on the depth chart.

Instead, I would just like to see Cabrera stay in the infield and focus on his offensive game, which can be improved.
