Every Thursday, we at Chicken Friars will pick the two best Padres performers over the past week and analyze what they accomplished. Then we will leave it up to you, the fans, to decide who earned the week’s Throwdown Thursday honor.

Padres’ first-baseman, Yonder Alonso, easily out-pointed teammate and starting pitcher Jeff Suppan to earn the coveted Week Five Throwdown Thursday honor.

Alonso’s award-winning stat line for the past week looked like this: He batted .440 with four RBI and four doubles while racking up 11 hits, including a career-high four-hit game against the Miami Marlins.

Alonso’s outstanding week lead him to get 79 percent of the Chicken Friars fans’ vote while his opponent received a meager 21 percent.

This week’s Throwdown Thursday competition features a Padre who is out to defend his crown and be the first player to win this distinct honor back-to-back times. The other is an outfielder who continues to produce when he is in the starting lineup. Yonder Alonso vs. Will Venable.

Yonder Alonso- Alonso is continuing where he left off last week. The first-baseman ended the week hitting .316 with three RBI and a .409 OBP. He also clubbed his first home run of the season. Alonso’s success can be attributed to him effectively hitting the ball to all fields, which has made him the team’s overall leader in average (.296), hits (37) and doubles (12).

Brad Mills-US PRESSWIRE

Will Venable – Whenever Venable is in the starting lineup, it is almost a given that he will come through with a base hit, as he has recorded a base hit in 23 of 25 games in which he has started. Venable has had a monster week hitting .500 with a club leading seven hits, two RBI and two walks. But the highlight of his week came on Tuesday against the Washington Nationals when Venable collected four-hits in a game (the eighth time he has done this in his career) and was a home run shy of being the first Padre to ever hit for the cycle.

Now Padres fans, vote in our poll for the Padres performer of the week. Is it Alonso or Venable?

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.
