The Padres added right-handed pitchers Simon Castro, Brandon Gomes, Jeremy Hefner and Evan Scribner, outfielder Cedric Hunter, catcher Luis Martinez and infielder Jeudy Valdez. All the players were placed on the 40 man roster so that they could avoid being claimed in the Rule 5 Draft.

Simon Castro was rated the second best prospect in the Padres Organization and looks to start the season in AAA this year.

Top pitching prospect Simon Castro allowed a homer to Royals prospect Clint Robinson. He allowed one earned and two unearned runs in two innings, striking out one, walking none, and allowing two hits.

Relievers Jeremy Hefner (who is a starter for San Antonio but, like Castro, pitched in relief today) and Evan Scribner combined for two shutout innings later in the game. Hefner K’d 2 and allowed one hit in 1 1/3, and Scribner retired both batters he faced.

San Antonio first baseman Matt Clark got the start at DH, and went 1-for-4 with a single and two strikeouts.

Catcher Luis Martinez got the start behind the plate. He had one hit in two at-bats, but he made it count, as it was the go-ahead two-run single.

Utilityman Andrew Parrino, an unlikely All-Star who didn’t even open the year in Double-A and hit just .235 with little power in High-A last year, entered the game as a sub in right field. He went 0-for-1.
