At the start of each series, we at Chicken Friars will zero in on an opposing player known to be a “Padre Killer.” No matter the day, time or place, this player is known to be a one-man wrecking crew when it comes to playing against the San Diego Padres.

In this column, I will analyze that player’s statistics against the Friars and try to offer some insight into how not to let that player beat our beloved team..

The Padres opened up the second half of the season playing winning baseball. That was until they went to San Francisco to play the N.L. West leading Giants, who took the three game series, and proved why they are the division leaders.

The Padres will now have to put the series lost behind them and move forward as they will make their first appearance at the new Marlins Park for a three game set against the Miami Marlins.

Getting in the Padres way stands a familiar face. He is the 6’2 270 pound first baseman known as El Caballo or Carlos Lee.

Yes, the same Carlos Lee who was featured as a Padre Killer when the Padres played the Houston Astros. Lee was traded to the Marlins on July 5, but I’m sure the results he puts up against the Padres are the same, no matter what team he plays for . Once a Padre Killer always a Padre Killer.

Here is how Carlos Lee destructs the Padres:

Lee is not fairing well at his new home though. In 10 games at Marlins Park, Lee has a .225 average with zero home runs and six RBI. The Padres need to capitalize on that.

Although Lee is a Padre Killer he is not the most dangerous player in the Marlins lineup. That being said, I’d go after Lee and try to make him beat me. Lee is much older now and isn’t the same ballplayer he once was. The Marlins are a mess and are a big disappointment. The Padres can tie up Lee with fastballs high and inside.

At the start of each series, we at Chicken Friars will zero in on an opposing player known to be a “Padre Killer.” No matter the day, time or place, this player is known to be a one-man wrecking crew when it comes to playing against the San Diego Padres.

In this column, I will analyze that player’s statistics against the Friars and try to offer some insight into how not to let that player beat our beloved team.

The Padres made headlines yesterday with the signing of outfielder Carlos Quentin to a three-year $30 million contract extension. Today is a new day, however, and if the Padres want to remain relevant in the 24/7 baseball news cycle then the Padres need to beat the N.L. West leading San Francisco Giants in a three-game series at AT&T Park.

When it comes to being in the news, San Francisco Giants’ third-baseman Pablo Sandoval is always in it when he plays against the San Diego Padres. That is because The Kung Fu Panda is a Padre Killer.

If this series were played at PetcoPark, the Padres would have caught a break because Sandoval is not as effective at Petco as he is atAT&TPark. In his home ballpark, Sandoval owns a career .330 batting average with 33 home runs and 142 RBI.

The Padres are one of the hottest teams in baseball and I believe as hot as they are that no one can beat them, so if I were the Padres I would throw everything at him. I’d dare him to hit the Padres’ best pitch. I’d pound Sandoval hard inside and soft away. I will just hope that Sandoval will not get a hold of one and became front page material.

It was another loss, and if the Padres keep doing this, fans may start to get a little worried. But the truth is, the wins and losses don’t matter during spring. The point of these games is practice, try-outs, and building chemistry. Yesterday against the Giants, Kyle Blanks showed off that power that keeps him around. He blasted a solo home run into the camera well on the center field batter’s eye. James Darnell followed with a solo shot of his own. But that was all the team could muster as they fell to the Giants 5-2.

Edinson Volquez admitted he was nervous starting his first gas with the new club, and some of those nerves showed. He hit one batter, gave up two hits, one walk, and one run. But Volquez was pounding the strike zone. He threw 23 of his first 31 pitches for strikes and was clearly more aggressive than most have come to expect from him.

The Giants Madison Bumgarner went three innings – the first Giants’ pitcher to do so this spring – and gave up just two hits while striking out five. He was in regular season form. The Giants offense scored in the second, the third, the seventh, and the eighth.

Anthony Bass got his second look at live batters this spring as he went two innings in relief of Volquez. Bass struck out two, gave up two hits, and did not allow a run. Brad Boxberger finished the game with one inning of perfect ball. He struck out two.

The Padres travel to Tempe today to take on the Angels at 12:05 PT. Clayton Richard gets his first start of the spring and his first since being sidelined with surgery last season. The game will be broadcast on MLB.tv.
