I don’t know about all of you beautiful readers, but I am looking for a deal. If I find something for 20% off, I wonder if a competitor has a lower price. In these tough economic times, we all need to do what we can to save a few bucks. Major League Baseball teams are no different; especially our Padres. There are a few interesting names that other teams non-tendered that could interest the Friars. Let’s take a look:

Jair Jurrens: A few years ago, Jurrens looked untouchable. In 2009, as a 23-year-old, Jurrjens put up a sparkling 2.60 ERA in 215 innings. He had a subpar 2010 season, but bounced back in 2011, making the All-Star team. Everything unraveled for the young righty in 2012, as he was demoted to AAA. He is still only 26 and the Padres would be wise to monitor the market for him.

Jeff Karstens: Okay, I will admit I am a little biased on this one. Like myself, Karstens is an East County guy(out of Mount Miguel) and I always have a soft spot for local guys. Karstens battled injuries in 2012, but did post an ERA below 4.00 for the Buccos. He is not a guy who has overwhelming stuff, but would be a tremendous swingman or a back-of-the-rotation starter. Think Tim Stauffer in 2010.

John Lannan: Lannan started for the Nationals on consecutive Opening Day’s — then began last year in AAA. Lannan reminds me a lot of Clayton Richard, a lefty who eats innings. Lannan is far from an ace, but would be a good fit in the Padres rotation in 2013.

With all of the other players who have been non-tendered, who would you like to see the Padres pursue. Let us know in the comments!
