Andrew Cashner is trying to make a case to be a part of the Padres rotation in 2013. His performance on Friday night did not help his case.

Cashner allowed five runs in the first inning, and the Rockies held on to beat San Diego, 7-4.

The first five Rockies reached base off of Cashner, and Colorado batted around in the first inning. Cashner did get some of his velocity back, hitting 96 MPH on the gun. It did not matter, as the Rockies pounded Cashner for six runs in just 3.2 innings of work.

The Padres got all of their runs in the bottom of the first, when Yonder Alonso slammed a pitch into the left field stands for a grand slam. It was Alonso’s eighth bomb of the year.

San Diego wasted a couple of golden opportunities to score runs. Cameron Maybin led off the fourth inning with a triple. Alexi Amarista and Anthony Bass struck out in consecutive at-bats, and Everth Cabrera popped up a bunt to end the threat. The Padres also stranded two runners in the fifth inning.

Tomorrow, the Padres will honor broadcaster Jerry Coleman with a statue tomorrow. The Padres will attempt to win the second game of the series tomorrow evening.

The 88-year-old icon is known for his signature call, “Oh Doctor! You can hang a star on that baby!” every time a Padre makes a play worthy of a highlight reel.

Fans who are familiar with the broadcaster’s way of describing the game through his “Colemanisms.” In honoring the colonel, I have come up with a list (in no particular order) of some of my favorite “Colemanisms.”

After reading this list, please comment on our page with some of your favorite “Colemanisms.”

“Hector Torrez, how can you communicate with Enzo Hernandez when he speaks Spanish and you speak Mexican?”

“Willie Davis is not as young as he used to be.”

“Rich Folkers is throwing up in the bullpen.”

“At the end of six innings of play, it’s Montreal 5, Expos 3″

“They throw (Dave) Winfield out at second- and he’s safe.”

Former players make truly good baseball broadcasters on very rare occasions. Vin Scully, one of the most known, most beloved radio broadcasters in the country never played pro ball. Ernie Harwell never played. Jack Buck called games for decades and never played an inning of professional baseball. Jerry Coleman stands right in line with these legends, but he also put together a pretty nice playing career.

Perhaps he doesn’t get the notoriety because of the team in which he calls games. Perhaps his spot in the radio booth is hidden in the shadows of greats long since past and legends broadcasting a couple hours north. No matter the case and no matter the recognition, Jerry Coleman is one of the best radio broadcasters to ever call a baseball game.
