The Padres officially lost LHP Josh Spence, when he was claimed off of waivers by the New York Yankees. The Padres designated the lefty for assignment earlier in the week, in order to open up room on the 40-man roster.

Spence, 24, was the Padres 9th round pick in 2010 and made his ML debut the next year. Spence had a solid 2011 campaign, when he posted a 2.73 ERA in 40 games. He spent most of 2012 in AAA.

The loss of Spence does not come as a surprise. He is young, cheap and left-handed. Left-handed hitters are hitting just .158 off of Spence in his short Major League career. It would not be surprising to see Spence crack the Yankees roster on Opening Day.

The Padres made several roster moves today, designated LHP Josh Spence and OF Blake Tekotte for assignment. The moves allow the Padres to reinstate LHP Cory Luebke, RHP Joe Wieland, INF/OF James Darnell, OF Kyle Blanks and C Nick Hundley from the 60-day DL.

Spence, 24, spent most of the year at AAA for the Padres, going 4-2, with a 4.20 ERA. He had a 4.35 ERA in 11 games for the big-league Padres this season. Spence had a nice rookie campaign in 2011, when he posted a 2.73 ERA in 40 appearances. I would be surprised if Spence cleared waivers.

May 4, 2012; San Diego, CA, USA; San Diego Padres relief pitcher Josh Spence (44) throws against the Miami Marlins at Petco Park. Mandatory Credit: Christopher Hanewinckel-US PRESSWIRE

Tekotte, 25, spent most of the year at AAA, and struggled. He posted a triple-slash line of .243/.284/.402, with 9 HR’s. Tekotte is a career .163 in 49 at-bats for the Padres. He showed promise with a solid year in AA in 2011.

With the moves the Padres now have a full 40-man roster. The Padres will have some interesting decisions to make in the coming weeks.

The second half of the Minor League schedule is underway, and Lake Elsinore has looked strong. The T-Padres are still bad. Here is what is going down on the farm.

Las Vegas 11, Tucson 6 (23-51): The T-Pads got off to a fast start, scoring 5 runs in the second, but were done in by the mighty offense of the 51′s. Las Vegas scored 5 in the 7th inning for the win. DH Yasmani Grandal continues to swing a hot bat, as he went 3-4, with 2 doubles, and 3 RBI’s. Grandal is hitting .318 for the year. Top prospect3B Jedd Gyroko went 1-5, and is hitting .313 on the year at AAA. RP Josh Spence took the loss in relief, and he was rocked. Spence recorded just one out, and gave up 5 earned runs. His ERA sits at a bloated 6.87.

Lake Elsinore 6 (2-0), Lancaster 2: Lake Elsinore got huge performances from 2B Casey McElroy(5-6 in A ball) who went 4-4, and 3B Connor Powers(.242 avg), who homered for a 2nd consecutive game. McElroy was recently promoted from Low-A Fort Wayne. Burch Smith(3.68 ERA) was fantastic for the Storm, as he took a perfect game into the fifth. He finished 5 innings, allowing just one hit.

Fort Wayne 4 (1-0, in 2nd half), Lake County 3: CF Donavan Tate(.200) had a nice game, going 2-5, with a double and RBI.
