Today was the deadline for teams to tender contracts to players on the 40-man roster. The Padres decided to non-tender Juan Oramas, removing him from the 40-man roster.

Oramas was considered a top prospect in the Padres organization, but he is currently rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. He is not expected to be back by midseason at the earliest.

Oramas, 22, is a Mexican-born left-hander who has had success in the Padres organization. In 2011, Oramas went 10-6, with a 3.49 between Single-A Lake Elsinore and AA San Antonio. He struggled in San Antonio in eight starts in 2012, posting a 6.37 ERA. It seems like the Padres will keep him in the organization, assuming another team does not claim him.

When my son was born, I turned to my wife and said, “I hope he’s left handed.” It wasn’t to satisfy some balance of power to which I thought the world needed more left-handed people. It was because in baseball, left-handed pitchers can find spots in a system even if their stuff is mediocre. Being left-handed increases a pitcher’s chances of making and staying in the big leagues. For the Padres, rather than mediocrity, they have a crew of left-handed pitchers that might rival anything the club has had in recent memory.

The Padres 40-man roster includes six lefties. Four of them have big league experience. Two of them are penciled in as part of the team’s starting rotation. Below is the list, and we will take a lookat each in more detail.

If you’re wondering what’s been going on with my favorite sleeper prospect, Lake Elsinore lefty Juan Oramas, lately, I haven’t discussed him much because the Padres are limiting his innings. He’s working in a tandem-starter arrangement with Jorge Reyes, usually going two innings a night. This makes sense because Mexican League pitchers (which Oramas was in 2009) typically get worked fairly hard, and Oramas’ 5’10″ frame doesn’t scream “workhorse” right now.

He’s thrown four innings in the tandem-starter arrangement, across two games, and has walked one, struck out four, and allowed no hits. He threw two perfect innings with 2 K today.

That puts Oramas’ season ERA down to 1.66, easily the lowest in the Padres’ system, and fourth-lowest in the minors overall. He’s just .08 off the lead.

We probably won’t get too much more to chew on from the Mexican lefty this season, but he’s certainly having a great campaign that puts him right there with the other top prospects in the organization.
