The Royals signed former Padre Miguel Tejada to a minor league deal today. The weirdest part of the deal is that Tejada will be added the 40-man roster, as soon as the Royals have an open spot, according to ESPN Deportes reporter Enrique Rojas(link is in spanish).

Tejada did not play in the majors last year, but has played winter ball this offseason to get into game shape. He last appeared in the big leagues with the Giants in 2011.

Tejada played a decent shortstop for the Padres in 2010, when he was acquired near the trade deadline. He played in 59 games for the Padres, where he posted a triple-slash line of .268/.317/.413, with 8 homers and 32 RBI’s. The Padres elected not to resign him after the season.

Baltimore Orioles beat writer, Brittany Ghiroli, reports on twitter that former Padres prospect, Wynn Pelzer, has officially been released by the Orioles.

I remember a time, not so long ago, when Pelzer and Cory Luebke where both hailed as the Padres’ best pitching prospects. We know what has become of Luebke, but it’s kind of sad that Pelzer never panned out. I will admit, I was a Pelzer fan- although I was happy when the Padres traded him for Miguel Tejada in 2010.

I don’t know if there is any room for Pelzer in the Padres’ farm system, but I’d like to see the Padres sign Pelzer and give him one last chance in the organization where he was first successful.

It seems that Miguel Tejada enjoyed his time in the NL West. He packed his bags and is moving to Northern California to join the World Champion San Francisco Giants. He accepted a 1-year deal for $6.5 milllion. He will be the new starting shortstop for the team.

The San Diego Padres are still looking for their starting middle infielders for the upcoming season. We all are getting anxious to see what Jed Hoyer has planned. There are a few holes that need to be filled and we keep seeing former players finding new teams to play on for 2011.

The Padres need a 2B and a SS for 2011. There has been talk in bringing back Jerry Hairston, but that would probably be in the utility role. There are a lot of rumors floating around that link the Padres to SS Jason Bartlett of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Padres have also been linked to the Red Sox for SS Jed Lowrie. Currently on the roster, Evereth Cabrera is the only player that is “ready” for the position.

There are some intriguing middle infielders that are available in free agency, but they would have to take a San Diego discount. Hoyer probably has to wait till late in the off-season to see if any of these players are getting desperate for a starting role. Orlando Cabrera, Felipe Lopez, and Orlando Hudson are all players that would look good in a Padres uniform. Jed Hoyer has to bring in somebody to play the positions, let’s see if he does it through trade or free agency.
