Every Thursday, we at Chicken Friars will pick the two best Padres performers over the past week and analyze what they accomplished. Then we will leave it up to you, the fans, to decide who earned the week’s Throwdown Thursday’s honor.

Chris Denorfia recently signed a two-year contract extension with the Padres, and the way Deno paid the Friars back is by winning his first Throwdown Thursday award.

Denorfia single handedly beat teammate and Throwdown Thursday challenger Cameron Maybin with a vote of 80 percent to 20 percent.

The Week 23 Champion posted a .529 average with one home run, four RBI, seven runs scored in five games played last week.

This week’s Throwdown Thursday competition will not feature Denorfia, but it will pit a Padre with the most Throwdown Thursday championships against a Padre who is having a career year. Yonder Alonso VS. Chase Headley.

Yonder Alonso – This week, Alonso is trying to lay claim to his sixth Throwdown Thursday award. To make his case, the first baseman had a .444 average with one home run and seven RBI. Throw in a .667 slugging percentage and three runs scored. He racked up four hits in a game last week against the Colorado Rockies, one of those hits was for a walk-off win.

Chase Headley – Headley is still making a push for the National League Player Of The Month for the month of September. His numbers last week, shows why he should be in contention for his seconde straight player of the month award. For the week, Headley batted .353 with one home run, two RBI, four runs scored and five walks.

Now Padres fans, vote in our poll for the Padres performer of the week. Is it Alonso or Headley?

Every Thursday, we at Chicken Friars will pick the two best Padres performers over the past week and analyze what they accomplished. Then we will leave it up to you, the fans, to decide who earned the week’s Throwdown Thursday’s honor.

Chase Headley was named the Major League Player of the Month for the month of August, with eleven games into September; the switch-hitting third baseman is making a strong case to win his second consecutive player of the month award.

Headley can use his Week 22 Throwdown Thursday award, which he unanimously won after defeating his infield mate Logan Forsythe to further build his case.

The Chicken Friar fans unanimously voted for Headley after he posted a .414 batting average (12 hits) with two home runs and 12 RBI last week. He also included two doubles and a .433 OBP.

This is Headley’s third Throwdown Thursday honor.

Headley is defending his player of the month award; the same however, can’t be said for his Throwdown Thursday title, as he is not nominated for the Week 23 Throwdown Thursday competition.

This week’s competion features a player fresh off of a contract extension, while the other was signed to an extension before the start of the season. Chris Denorfia VS. Cameron Maybin.

Chris Denorfia – Last week, the Padres locked up outfielder Denorfia to a two-year contract extension, and so far the Padres have been getting their moneys worth. For the week, Denorfia has a .529 average with one home run, four RBI and seven runs scored in five games played. Denorfia’s production has him playing regularly in right field.

Cameron Maybin- After much of a disappointing season, Maybin is starting to show the type of talent that rewarded him with a contract extension at the beginning of the year. That talent led him to put together a .364 average with one home run, four RBI, three doubles and five runs scored for this week. That talent led him to put together a .364 average with one home run, four RBI, three doubles and five runs scored for this week.

Every Thursday, we at Chicken Friars will pick the two best Padres performers over the past week and analyze what they accomplished. Then we will leave it up to you, the fans, to decide who earned the week’s Throwdown Thursday’s honor.

Week 20 of the Throwdown Thursday competition did not produce a clear cut winner. Instead, Padres center fielder Cameron Maybin and shortstop Everth Cabrera will share the honor, a first in Throwdown Thursday history. Maybin and Cabrera both managed to split the Chicken Friars fans’ vote at 50 percent.

Maybin got his half of the vote by going on a hitting tear, thanks in part to a newly configured batting stance. For the week, the center fielder racked up 11 hits in 24 at-bats to compile a weekly average of .458. He also had four RBI and three stolen bases for the week.

The fans who voted for Cabrera were convinced of his move to the leadoff spot in the batting order where the shortstop batted .379 with three RBI, five stolen bases and two runs scored in the past week.

Despite a stellar week from both Maybin and Cabrera, neither player made the Week 21 Throwdown Thursday ballot. This week’s ballot features a pitching duel. One player has been consistently successful since coming off the disabled list and the other is a starting pitcher who made his Major League Debut. Eric Stults VS. Casey Kelley.

Eric Stults pitches against the Giants at Petco Park. Jake Roth-US PRESSWIRE

Eric Stults – The lefty toed the slab twice this week for the Padres and recorded the win in both outings. Stults pitched a combined 13 innings, giving up a total of eight hits and striking out nine batters for the week. He also managed to give up just one unearned run during that stretch. Stult’s arm wasn’t the only thing making headlines this week. At the plate, Stults collected three hits with three RBI.

Casey Kelly versus Atlanta Braves Christopher Hanewinckel-US PRESSWIRE

Casey Kelly – With an injury to Jason Marquis, the Padres were forced to call-up its top-rated prospect in right-handed pitcher Casey Kelley. In his Major League Debut against the Atlanta Braves, Kelly showed why he is the Padres’ most prized prospect. The 22-year-old tossed six innings while giving up three hits and striking out four. Kelly threw his fastball, change-up and curveball all for strikes. The former shortstop added on to his exciting night by collecting his first big league hit.

Now Padres fans, vote in our poll for the Padres performer of the week. Is it Stults or Kelly?
