The Padres have acquired minor league lefthander Tyler Lumsden, a finesse pitcher in Double-A, for future considerations. Lumsden, 27, will report to San Antonio.

Lumsden was an intriguing prospect in the Royals system after a 2006 in which he posted a 2.77 ERA in Double-A, but he’s had K/BB ratios under 1/1 for three years running now, and hasn’t succeeded in either starting or relief roles. Lumsden was 4-8 with a 4.04 ERA in 20 games (16 starts) for the Astros’ Double-A affiliate. He walked 34 and struck out just 33 in 91 1/3 innings.

Why the Padres went out of their way to acquire a 27-year-old with poor command, no strikeout ability, and four straight poor years is beyond me, but at least they aren’t giving up much of anything to get him.
